World’s smallest servo drive: the Everest XCR by Ingenia

Ingenia, the Spanish servo control systems specialist, has recently announced the world’s smallest servo motor controller in its class of power range and functionality. The new servo drive was developed specifically for robotic applications. However, many other applications with constrained installation space can also benefit from the compact but powerful Everest XCR.

IngeniaIngenia's Everest Core series includes ultra-compact and ready-to-use motor controllers from the company’s servo drive range. Thanks to its compact form factor and rugged design, this high-power servo drive can be mounted practically anywhere. From robot components of all kinds, to unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, even inside the motor enclosure. The aluminium body provides for excellent heat dissipation and superior reliability.

However, the products in the Everest Core series are much more than simply new DC servo drives. They also feature advanced transistor technology with high power density and efficiency, and their EMI emissions are negligible. This combination of features delivers perfect linear amplifier performance, plus ultra-fast servo loops for smooth, controlled movements (max. frequency of current loop 75 kHz, speed loop 25 kHz).

Features

Thanks to the high efficiency of the electronics (up to 99%), the dimensions are exceptionally compact: just 26 x 34.5 x 17 mm. Moreover, the Everest XCR can sustain 30 A continuous and 60 A peak current, and may be powered by either a single or dual supply (maximum 80 VDC). In the latter case, the logic and motor power are separated. The dual power supply also allows the drive standby power consumption to be reduced to a minimum.

Configuration
The resolution of current measurements is easily set using the built-in configurable gain circuitry, from 0.379 mA/count to 2.475 mA/count. This makes the Everest one of the most versatile drives, capable of controlling motors rated from just a few watts to in the kilowatts. The drive itself could hardly be easier to set up: one only has to install the motor, and configure the drive using the free MotionLab software.

Encoders
The Everest XCR supports daisy-chaining of BiSS-C encoders with a maximum frame size of 64 bits. Combinations are also supported with digital Hall sensors, digital incremental encoders and SSI EtherCAT. The drive itself is controlled via an ultra-fast and safe SPI bus that gives engineers maximum freedom of design for multi-axis applications.
