Dimetix laser sensors ensure positioning accuracy of stacker cranes

As authorised representative of Dimetix in the Netherlands, Rotero offers Dimetix contactless laser sensors for use in warehouse storage/retrieval applications. Mounted on automated stacker cranes, these sensors play an essential role in the accurate positioning of these systems. With a wide ambient temperature range, they are unaffected by wheel slip and virtually insensitive to dust and dirt, enabling positioning to millimetre accuracy under all conditions.

Dimetix exampleStacker cranes – also referred to as AS/RS (automatic storage/retrieval systems) or warehouse cranes – are widely used in distribution centres for the efficient storage of goods and fast order picking. The automatic operation of these cranes makes it possible to rapidly and precisely store and retrieve uniform or palletised products within the warehouse racking. The cranes move both horizontally and vertically so that literally every position in every rack in the entire warehouse is accessible.

Small spot size, long range

There are basically two types of stacker crane: aisle-bound (the crane accesses only the racks in a single aisle), and aisle-changing (the crane can also move from aisle to aisle). To enable precise control, all stacker cranes use sensors to determine the position of the crane and lifting unit. These sensors are mounted on the mast of the crane, and measure both the horizontal and vertical distance to a reference point.

The accuracy of the sensors is of great importance in this type of application, because it has a direct influence on the positioning accuracy of the crane itself at the rack compartment. And that’s exactly where Dimetix shines, because they constantly focus on high precision combined with the smallest possible spot size – even when measuring over large distances.

Features

Dimetix sensorThanks to their contactless operation, these laser sensors achieve an absolute accuracy of 1 mm, eliminating positioning errors. Unlike wheel encoders, laser sensors are not subject to wheel slip, which can lead to cumulative measurement error. Even after a system restart, the sensor immediately measures the exact position without any zeroing cycle or reference measurements.

Furthermore, the laser sensors can sustain ambient temperatures from -40 to +60° C. These components are therefore widely used in perishable product warehousing, frozen product distribution centres and storage facilities for small items, but also long-term storage facilities.

Lastly, the sensors can work with various standard interfaces, including PROFIBUS (via an external module), or PROFINET, EtherCAT and Ethernet/IP via an optional module.
