Flashing Device by Fandis: ensuring safety when working in electrical cabinets

Occupational safety is about protecting workers from unsafe situations. Electrical panels and cabinets are extremely hazardous when opened for inspection or servicing. To reduce the risk of unintentional injury, Fandis has recently extended its product range with a warning device that is especially designed for electrical enclosure safety.

The FD or Flashing Device series is a visible annunciator for the Orangis range of products specifically for E-cabinets. It comprises a controller integrated with three flashing lamps which are activated when the electrical cabinet is energized, clearly warning the inspection or maintenance technician of the hazard.

Why three flashing lamps?

Because the same Flashing Device can be installed in both single-phase and three-phase systems for a consistent and unambiguous signalling experience for the technician. In single-phase systems, the three lamps indicate the presence or absence of voltage. In industrial three-phase systems where higher voltages are typically distributed on phase-specific bus bars, the three lamps indicate the presence or absence of voltage on each phase. The flashing of the lamps underlines the hazardous situation both to the skilled technician and the unskilled passer-by; a continuously-lit lamp might only be experienced as a simple operational status indicator.

Mounting

Designed for easy mounting inside the top of the electrical enclosure, the Fandis FD series can be installed with up to two optional co-mounted switches. The first of these is a limit switch that suppresses the Flashing Device when the cabinet door is closed, saving energy and avoiding needless flash cycles.

The second is intended as a safety interlock to de-energize the cabinet when the door is opened. To enable authorized personnel to energize the circuits inside the electrical enclosure for diagnostic or inspection purposes, the Flashing Device allows simulation of door closure. The lamps will then flash, reminding everyone in the vicinity that they are exposed to hazardous live circuits.

This flexibility makes the Fandis Flashing Device an ideal safety feature for electrical cabinets, combining hazard warning, phase status signalling and a safety interlock in a single device.
