With the R-type, Oriental Motors has expanded the BLV series with a compact and lightweight brushless DC motor equipped with a 55 V battery. Thanks to their low weight and compact design – characteristic of the “modular automation products” range – these motors are particularly suitable for self-driving vehicles. They also feature an automatic hold function (without the need for a mechanical brake) and can be controlled with high precision, even at higher speeds.

The DC motors from the traditional BLV series use a battery with an output voltage of 24 to a maximum of 38 V. In the new R-type, the capacity of the voltage source has been increased to a maximum of 55 V, which increases the number of applications and their range. Depending on the model, the R models deliver a power output of up to 200 W. When the battery voltage drops, the motors will not stop but will at most reduce their speed or maximum torque.
The R-type motors are compatible with Modbus (RTU) and CANopen. This allows data from the corresponding driven axes to be sent, received and collected, enabling axes to be synchronised accurately. The motors can be controlled over a wide speed range of 1–4,000 rpm via the driver, which is also lightweight and compact. This makes it easy to achieve a smooth, even start and stop, and the control accuracy is maintained even at high speeds.
Features of R-type BLDC
In terms of functionality, the R-type motors from the BLV series offer the necessary options. When the motor stops in the energised state, it can be used immediately as an electric holding brake without the need for an additional mechanical brake. When the input signal ‘P-LOOP-MODE’ is activated, it can hold the position without deviating from the stop position.
ATL stands for: Automatically Limits Output Torque. This function limits the torque and prevents the motor from stopping as a result of overload. This means that the motor will continue to run even if the vehicle hits an obstacle, sudden acceleration is required or the load exceeds the permitted limit. When the ATL function is switched off, the motor will sound an alarm in the event of overload.
Support software for the engines
Finally, the motors can be connected to the BLST01 software for start-up, operation and maintenance purposes, among other things. This free downloadable software provides immediate insight into the parameters and settings, which can then be configured or adjusted as desired. It also allows the status of the motor to be monitored and checked. Data on speeds, torques and I/O signals are displayed in the corresponding waveforms and can thus serve as important input for maintenance or process optimisation. The software also visualises vibrations using FFT analyses.
What are the applications?
The motors are suitable for use in transport robots, conveyor belts and stirring mechanisms (agitators), among other things.
