60 HV relay for electric vehicles

Kissling introduces a high-voltage relay specially developed for use in electric vehicles. To minimise the duration of the associated arcing during switching, a unique geometry of the ceramic switching chamber is combined with strategically placed blow magnets. The result: a high-voltage relay with extremely high reliability and a long service life that can be used as a safe switch-off for high-voltage drive systems and for high-voltage applications requiring 100,000 cycles or more.

HV Relay Kissling

The ongoing electrification of the automotive industry presents new challenges for manufacturers of electrical components. In order to match the performance of combustion engines, for example, it is necessary to work with high voltages. However, this also means that the drive system is exposed to arcing, which damages the contact surfaces and reduces the service life of the components.

Geometry and blow magnets

To minimise the effect of these arcs, Kissling developed a high-voltage relay that limits the duration of the arcs. The solution consists of a newly balanced geometry of the ceramic chamber combined with strategically placed blow magnets. Because this combination allows the contacts to switch much faster, it is not necessary to fill the chambers with an inert gas; instead, this can easily be done in an oxygen-rich environment. This makes the problem of “leaking chambers”, where oxygen can penetrate, a thing of the past.

Thanks to the additional integrated electronic functions for coil control and status signalling, the high-voltage relay combines high reliability with improved usability and customer-friendly installation.

Advantages of high-voltage relays

Some of the most important advantages at a glance:

  • The main contacts are designed for continuous load and 100% duty cycle.
  • Under average load conditions, the number of switching cycles is at least 100,000.
  • The relay is suitable for at least two million mechanical operations.
  • Resistant to shocks and vibrations up to 6G
  • Suitable for use within a temperature range of -40 to 85 °C
  • The protection class of IP67 / IP6K9K makes the relay suitable for many applications.
  • Easy to adjust thanks to the integrated PWM electronics with a multi-voltage range of 9–32 VDC
  • Maximum safety during emergency stops with an overload of up to 750 VDC
  • Efficient design of coil and magnetic field with optimal switching characteristics and minimal requirements for holding current.
