Read all about our Linear Stepper Motor

At Rotero, we supply high-quality linear stepper motors for applications where precision, reliability and efficiency in linear movements are essential. With our years of expertise and bespoke solutions, we support you in overcoming your technical challenges.

What is a linear stepper motor?

A linear stepper motor is an electromechanical device that directly converts electrical pulses into linear movement. Unlike traditional stepper motors, which generate a rotary motion, a linear stepper motor delivers a direct linear displacement. The beauty of this design is that no additional mechanical transmission, such as a toothed belt or spindle, is required, enhancing precision, simplicity and reliability.

Operation is based on magnetic fields that move the linear element (such as a slide mechanism or an integrated spindle) in a controlled manner. Each pulse sent by the controller to the motor results in a fixed linear step, enabling highly accurate positioning.

Types of linear stepper motor

Rotero offers various types of linear stepper motor, each designed for specific applications and requirements:

Captive linear stepper motors have an integrated linear mechanism, such as a spindle, and are a compact solution for applications with limited space.

Non-captive linear stepper motors are designed for flexible configurations and use an external thread or spindle for longer displacements.

External linear stepper motors work with an external linear actuator, ideal for higher loads or complex systems.

Linear stepper motor features

Linear stepper motors are characterised by high precision, reliability and simple control. They generate direct linear movement without the need for complex mechanical transmissions, minimising wear and extending the system’s service life. Thanks to their fixed step size, they deliver consistent and repeatable positioning, often with a resolution down to micrometre level. Many of our models are compactly designed, making them suitable for applications where space is limited. Furthermore, the motors are easy to control with standard step pulses and direction commands, and they are available with various stroke lengths, speeds and forces.

Linear stepper motor applications

Linear stepper motors are used in various industries and applications where precise linear movements are required. In medical equipment, such as pipetting systems and laboratory analysers, these motors ensure reliable and precise positioning. In 3D printers, they play a key role in accurately moving the print head or platform. Industrial automation also utilises linear stepper motors for pick-and-place systems, positioning and clamping devices. Additionally, they are used in the semiconductor industry, where the highest accuracy is needed for positioning delicate materials, and in optical systems, such as cameras and microscopes, for lens adjustments.
