More and more companies are using Industrial Ethernet for automation and process control. Machine builders are therefore increasingly asking their suppliers for components that can communicate via Modbus TCP or PROFINET, for example. For this reason, JVL – represented by Rotero – has expanded its series of integrated servo and stepper motors with an EtherCAT module. In addition, the MacTalk parameterisation software has been adapted so that it can also communicate via Ethernet.

The servo and stepper motors from JVL are characterised by average accuracy and simple construction. The integrated electronics save space in the control cabinet and allow the user to benefit from the fact that the motor and control system are optimally matched to each other. These various features make these motors suitable for use in packaging machines, among other applications.

EtherCAT module

Due to the growing demand for components that can communicate via Industrial Ethernet, JVL has equipped these servo and stepper motors with an EtherCAT module. This open standard allows users to establish high-speed, real-time Ethernet communication between the various elements in their system and the main control unit.

EtherCAT for servo motors

The EtherCAT module for servo motors with integrated electronics offers a communication speed of 100 Mbit/s, while the response time is in the sub-millisecond range. The module also provides two ports for daisy chaining, which allows various peripheral devices to be connected to a single computer via a loop.

Other notable features include user-friendly LED indicators and robust M12 connectors that are suitable for use in harsh industrial environments. Four digital inputs, two digital outputs and two analogue outputs are available as options.

EtherCAT for stepper motors

For stepper motors with integrated electronics, two modules are available for high and low I/O respectively. The first is a 17-pin M12 connector, and the second is an 8-pin variant. These modules can be combined with stepper motors with a torque of 3.0–12.0 Nm. In addition to an EtherCAT interface, these motors are also suitable for wireless Bluetooth, WLAN or Zigbee, Ethernet/IP, Powerlink, Modbus TCP/IP, RS485 and PLC built-in.

Configuration software

In addition to high communication speed and reliability, the EtherCAT module offers the possibility to log into the motors remotely using the MacTalk parameterisation software. The oscilloscope functions allow the largest number of events to be read out over time, which contributes to simplified maintenance and the ability to find and resolve faults more quickly.
