A stepper motor driver, also known as a stepper motor amplifier, is an electronic device that supplies current and voltage to the stepper motor, allowing it to be controlled precisely. The driver receives pulse signals from a controller and converts them into a power signal that moves the stepper motor. Each pulse received by the driver corresponds to an angular rotation, ensuring controlled and repeatable positioning.
Various types of stepper motor driver are available, each designed for specific applications. The standard drives often feature microstepping settings and receive a pulse and direction signal that controls the rotational speed, position and acceleration in an open-loop system. The advanced drivers often incorporate closed-loop control via a feedback encoder signal. This enables torque and position control. These drives often also offer communication protocols, such as EtherCAT and CANopen, making them suitable for industrial applications.
One of the key features of a simple stepper motor driver is open-loop position control without encoder feedback. Closed-loop systems do incorporate encoder feedback and are often equipped with bus–communication. The encoder feedback also allows torque control.
