Need to measure quickly and accurately up to a distance of 500 metres? Use laser sensors!

Industrial automation and robotics, transport, logistics, mobility and maritime applications

Laser sensors often measure either the transit time of the light or the phase shift in distance measurements. However, both methods have their advantages and disadvantages: the transit time measurement is fast, but often not accurate enough due to the complex time measurement. The measurement of the phase shift is considerably more accurate, but less fast than the pure travel time measurement due to the more complex processing. If applications require large distances to be measured with high accuracy and speed, neither method is ideal on its own. It therefore makes sense to combine both advantages. The result? Dimetix laser sensors that measure distances from 0.05 to 500 metres quickly and with millimetre accuracy. Rotero tells you all about it in this article.

When is this significant?

High-precision, high-speed measurement for positioning, measuring or monitoring tasks is essential in many applications. In warehouse cranes and ASRS (Automatic Storage and Retrieval System) shuttles in distribution centres, for example, it is indispensable, but it is also desirable for level monitoring in large tanks or silos. Another typical application can be found in mechanical engineering, for example in installations for processing metal pipes or for the automatic cutting of beams or planks. Gantry or harbour cranes also depend on long-distance measurements with high accuracy, and even tunnel boring machines require fast and accurate distance measuring systems.

Conventional methods are insufficient for long distances

The Swiss company Dimetix AG uses an innovative combination of both methods in its laser sensors. These sensors modulate the laser amplitude at high frequency. This allows them to operate faster and deliver accurate measurements over long distances. The sensors have a measuring speed of up to 250 Hz and an output frequency of 1 kHz. They are robust and specially designed for industrial applications. For outdoor use, there are sensor versions with an integrated heating function (sensor temperature range: -40°C to +60°C).

The measurement accuracy is ±1 millimetre at ±2 sigma, which corresponds to a statistical certainty of 95.4% according to ISO 1938-2015. This accuracy is continuously monitored by extensive testing. These extremely accurate laser sensors are revolutionary for monitoring multi-track overhead cranes. They enable precise weight distribution, guarantee effective collision prevention and thus contribute significantly to safety and efficiency.

Laser sensors offer intralogistics advantages

Dimetix laser sensors offer many advantages in intralogistics, leading to more efficient and safer storage and material flow management. High measurement accuracy is one of the most important advantages, allowing you to position goods and racks with precision. This optimises storage capacity and minimises errors during storage and retrieval. In addition, the sensors can perform fast and continuous measurements, which increases the dynamics and flexibility of logistics processes.

Another advantage is the reliability of the laser sensors, which deliver accurate results even under difficult environmental conditions such as dust, humidity or temperature fluctuations. Thanks to their ease of maintenance and long service life, you can reduce operating costs and maintain high system availability. The sensors can also be easily integrated into existing intralogistics systems, which means lower implementation costs and a shorter payback period.

Integrating laser sensors into automated storage and transport systems increases safety, as they help prevent collisions and accidents through accurate monitoring and control. Finally, they support digitalisation and connectivity in intralogistics by providing accurate data for analysis and process optimisation. Laser sensors therefore make a significant contribution to improving efficiency, safety and flexibility in intralogistics on all fronts.

Optimising crane monitoring for multi-track overhead travelling cranes

The integration of laser sensors into the monitoring of multi-track overhead travelling cranes is transforming safety, efficiency and structural integrity. Precise positioning, collision prevention and automated control not only help to minimise risks and damage, but also optimise the performance of crane systems, leading to sustainable improvement and optimisation of operational processes.

Prevent collisions

Laser sensors continuously monitor the position of cranes, for example. On the one hand, this prevents cranes from operating too close to each other, which can lead to excessive stress on rails or support structures. On the other hand, the distances between individual cranes on the same track can be accurately monitored. Preventing collisions between crane units is therefore an important advantage of this technology. Through real-time distance monitoring, laser sensors can activate immediate warnings or even stop crane operation if an overly close approach is detected. This not only helps to minimise damage to the cranes, but also contributes to a safer working environment for employees.

Simple configuration and a wide range of interfaces

In addition, laser sensors offer user-friendly operation and simple configuration. Advanced display systems enable operators to monitor and control in real time. Additional integration options via Industrial Ethernet interfaces such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT make it possible to use the sensors in virtually any application. Furthermore, standard integrated interfaces such as SSI, RS-422/RS-485 or RS-232 ensure that this technology is also accessible to less experienced users.

In addition to the advantages mentioned above, Dimetix laser sensors are distinguished by their versatility. They are used worldwide in various industrial sectors and applications and score highly in terms of user-friendliness and Swiss quality standards. Rotero can advise you on your specific application.
